About

hull_studio-portrait-web.jpg

Laura Hull’s fine art photography centers on her everyday life, using domestic spaces and objects as autobiographic gestures that correspondingly encompass universal human nature. Whether exploring the relationship between habitat and inhabitancy (how we engage our domestic environment) or examining our psychic/spiritual exchanges with nature, Hull brings a deep and sometimes humorous perspective to her subjects, using intuition and femininity to define edges and reveal subtleties. At the core of her work is the desire to uncover beauty.

Hull’s artistic career began in the ceramics world with two international apprenticeships and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, culminating in a thesis show consisting of architectural site-specific sculptures. In 1989 she shifted into photography and began exhibiting in galleries and museums, including the Craig Krull Gallery in Los Angeles. She has taught ceramics and photography, and has received multiple grants and public art commissions. She resides in Altadena with her architect husband, Mark Stankard.
